ATHLETIC FIELDS - A wide variety of fields are available for sporting events. Located on both Town and Board of Education Properties. Fields range from Little League, Football, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Baseball and small game fields. There are approximately 37 athletic fields available for usage. Parties wishing use of a certain field must call to reserve the field and pick up a fields permit.
ATHLETIC EVENTS - Events are held nightly at the various fields throughout the Town. Adult softball games are held each weekday evening at 6:15 p.m. at Bittner Park. Two to three games are played nightly at the lighted field at Bittner.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL COURTS - A volleyball court is now available at Jacobs Beach for use by residents from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check with the lifeguards to get a ball. After 5 p.m. residents must bring their own ball.
BITTNER PARK - Located on Route 77 three miles North of Route 1. This park contains 15 acres of active recreation area and 126 acres of passive areas. Active area consists of a playground, one lighted softball field, three little league fields, a jogging/walking path, one lighted soccer field, roller sports complex, ice rink, fishing access, rest rooms, concession stand and more. Passive area contains horse riding trails, jogging trails and acres of woodlands to hike and walk and cross country skiing.
CHAFFINCH ISLAND - Located at the very end of Chaffinch Island Road, the beautiful park is a natural preserve. This park overlooks Long Island Sound and offers numerous picnic areas, tables, grills, salt marshes, and some short trails. There is no swimming or boating allowed from this park. It is ideal for group and family outings. A permit is required. Open year round from sunrise to dark.
CHITTENDEN PARK - Located off of Seaside Avenue 100 yards from Jacobs Beach, this park offers wide open space with a fully developed softball field, soccer field picnic benches, salt marshes, and small un-staffed beach area that overlooks Long Island Sound. Four Bocci courts are at Chittenden Park and are available for residents to use. Call the Recreation Department for more information regarding availability. There is plenty of parking. Chittenden Park is available for group outings. Permit is required. Open year round.
GUILFORD LAKES GOLF COURSE - Located at 200 North Madison Road. The renovated and redesigned course is open to the public and available for leagues and tournaments. It is open Monday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call (203) 453-8214 for Tee Times.
JACOBS BEACH - Located at the end of Seaside Avenue. This is a fully staffed public swim area for salt water recreation. Includes a beach area for swimming and sunning. Rest rooms, changing booths and outdoor showers are available, as well as a picnic shelter. Playground equipment for small children and beach volleyball courts, grills, and ample parking. Park opens April 1st and is staffed with Lifeguards from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Beach passes are required for admission or a parking fee will be charged. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A volleyball court is now available at Jacobs Beach for use by residents from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check with the lifeguards to get a ball. After 5 p.m. residents must bring their own ball.
The boat racks at Jacobs Beach can be rented seasonally for $45 to Guilford residents. There is a non-resident fee of $90. Boat rack applications may be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Department office and payment is due at that time. Boat racks are assigned on a first come, first serve basis and are assigned randomly. All boat rack recipients are required to affix numbers to their boats that have been assigned by the office. Boat rack applications do not include access to Jacobs Beach. Residents may obtain beach pass separately. Non-residents must pay a daily fee to use Jacobs Beach. The boat racks are accessible by wheelchair.
LAKE QUONNIPAUG - Located off of Route 77 three miles north of Route 80. Quonnipaug offers a large fresh water swim area, bath house, rest rooms, showers, picnic area, parking and more. The south end grass area is designated for small craft launch, such as, windsurfers, sunfish and small craft. Beach passes are also required for this area. Officially opens Memorial Day weekend for weekend ONLY. Fully staffed as of mid-June with lifeguards and gateguards both weekdays/weekends. Beach closes Labor Day. Beach passes required for all users. Entrance fee required for anyone without a season pass. Open weekdays and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays
11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
LONG HILL PARK - Located on Long Hill Road, the athletic fields on the former Fonicello property offer athletic fields. The 8-acre park includes a soccer/lacrosse field, a baseball field, and a football field.
PICNIC KITS - Kits are available for summer usage. These kits contain many items to add to your family outings or picnics. Packed into the kits are frisbees, bats and balls, jump ropes, nerf balls, volleyball net and more. There is no charge for usage of the kit. A $20 deposit is required upon pick-up of the kit. When the kit is returned, with all the equipment intact, the deposit will be returned in full. Anything damaged or missing you will be charged fair for. Residents must reserve in advance, first come first serve. RESIDENTS only.
MILL POND PARK - Located at the intersection of North River and Cherry Streets. Mainly a winter recreation area featuring supervised ice skating. This park is also used for fishing during the spring, summer and fall seasons.
NATHANAEL B. GREENE COMMUNITY CENTER - Located at 32 Church Street. This is the headquarters of the Recreation Department. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All operations of the Department are carried out from the center. Meeting and program rooms are available for use. Application forms are to reserve a room and/or park facility. They may be picked up at the center during our business hours. No fee for use of the center during weekdays providing the group is at least 60 percent residents and in a non-profit organization.
NUT PLAINS PARK - Located off of Nut Plains Road. This park includes a lacrosse field and a smaller multi-use field. Re The park closes at dusk. Available for group outings. Permit is required.
PARK PERMITS - Permits are required if your group wishes to use a park for a group outing. Permit may be obtained at the Community Center. No charge for the permit, an application must be filled out AT LEAST two weeks prior to your outing so they may be processed. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE ALLOWED in any parks without the permission of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Board of Selectmen.
TENNIS COURTS - Guilford High School offers six courts. Baldwin Middle School offers two courts, Adams Middle School offers two courts and Guilford Lakes has one court. Court areas available on a first come, first serve basis. Please be considerate of your playing time. We hope to accommodate all residents.
BASKETBALL COURTS - There are lighted outdoor courts at Adams Middle School. There are also two lighted courts abutting the Police Department property at 400 Church Street. Reservations for teams and leagues to use the basketball courts may be made through the Parks and Recreation office. Courts are lighted until 10:00 p.m.
TRAILS - The Guilford Conservation Commission manages an extensive system of marked trails for hikers, non-motorized bikers and equestrians. The Westwoods Trails Committee, a division of the Guilford Land Conservation Trust, maintains the system.

Westwoods - 40 miles of trails in southwestern Guilford blazed through a varied forest of marshlands, fresh, and salt water, covering more than 1000 acres. Entrances at Peddlers Road and Route 146, Sam Hill, and others.
Timberlands - 600 acres of forest stretching from the Guilford Lakes area north to Route 80. The trail system covers only the southern section accessed from parking areas on the east side of Maupas Road or from the west side on Lakeside Drive.
Bluff Head - a prominent natural feature of the North Guilford Landscape containing the Mattabesett Trail, which is part of the Connecticut Forest and Park Association's 500 miles of Blue-Blazed Trails. The trail is accessed from a dirt road turnoff just north of Great Hill Road on Route 77. An encampment 600 feet above sea level offers the best view of Faulkner's Island.
The Nut Plains Woods - accessed from Cindy Lane, 48 acre woods owned by the Guilford Land Conservation Trust.
Horse Trails - Trail Riders of the Shoreline (TROTS) is a local riding organization dedicated to the establishment and preservation of a riding system in the shoreline area. For information, phone Terry Holland-Buckley, 457-0527.
