Guilford has a volunteer fire department that is under the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners. The board consists of three members appointed by the Board of Selectmen to serve staggered 3-year terms without compensation. The fire commissioners appoint the fire marshal and deputy fire marshals.

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT
Established in 1852, it is staffed by about 80 volunteer members and 11 IAFF Local 4177 professional firefighters.. The volunteers receive training, on their own time, locally and at the state level and also maintain the equipment, which reflects in the lowest fire insurance rate available. There are four fire fighting companies and one rescue company. Three fire companies and two rescue units which are located in the North Guilford district.
The Rescue Squad is divided into two units one in the downtown district and the other in North Guilford. Volunteers staff two rescue vehicles and offer basic life support level care to the sick and injured in the pre-hospital setting.
The rescue vehicles are equipped to handle incidents from medical emergencies to motor vehicle accidents to heavy extrication/construction incidents. The Guilford Fire Department Rescue Squad also operates a Marine Division that answers calls for assistance on both inland and open waterways.
All equipment is supplied through the town's annual budget, but the individual companies own the buildings, which house equipment. The department's annual fund drive helps gather voluntary contributions to maintain these buildings.
The department also sponsors the Explorer Scout Program for youths aged 14 to 18.
